Stockton is a city in California's Central Valley and the county seat of San Joaquin County, situated along the San Joaquin River where the valley meets the sprawling waterways of the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta. With about 320,800 residents counted in the 2020 census, it ranks among California's most populous inland cities and functions as the commercial and governmental hub of the northern San Joaquin Valley. Its location gives it a rare geographic profile: an inland city that nonetheless operates as a seaport, thanks to the Stockton Deepwater Shipping Channel, a manmade waterway that connects the Port of Stockton to Suisun Bay and San Francisco Bay. The city's history follows that geography. Founded during the California Gold Rush by Charles M. Weber and named for Commodore Robert F. Stockton, it grew as a supply and shipping center for the goldfields before transitioning to an agricultural economy as the surrounding valley became one of the world's most productive farming regions. Stockton is also a university town.
